Egypt Red Sea Shark Attack: Beaches Closed After Tourist Killed

68-Year-Old Austrian Woman Dies in Snorkeling Attack

Authorities Close Beaches, Investigate Incident

Egyptian authorities have closed several beaches along the Red Sea coast after a 68-year-old Austrian tourist was killed in a shark attack while snorkeling near Hurghada. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, and the victim has been identified as Elisabeth Sauer, a former Austrian councillor.

According to witnesses, Sauer was swimming in a designated snorkeling area when she was attacked by a shark. She sustained severe injuries and died at the scene. The type of shark involved in the attack is still unknown, and authorities are investigating the incident.

As a precautionary measure, authorities have closed beaches in the area and banned all swimming and snorkeling activities. Red flags have been posted along the coastline to warn tourists of the potential danger.

This is the second shark attack in Egypt's Red Sea coast in recent years. In 2020, a Ukrainian tourist was killed in a shark attack near Sharm el-Sheikh. The Egyptian government has since implemented several measures to enhance beach safety, including increased lifeguard presence and the deployment of shark nets and drumlines.
